Vacuum Guide - Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaners

Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaners

The wet/dry vacuum combination is no longer just a need in the workshop.  In recent years, the technology has improved greatly, decreasing the loud screeching noises that the units were known for in the past.

When purchasing a wet/dry vacuum there are a few things to keep in mind.  These units are available in many different sizes and HP, ranging from 6 - 22 gallons and 1.5 - 10.5 HP.  The capacity of the vacuum should match needs in the following ways:

  1. Wall mount vacuum cleaners with 1.5 HP and a 1 gallon tank are good for quick, easy cleanups such as spills.  This type can be hung on the wall for easy storage.
  2. Six gallon vacuum cleaners are good for smaller jobs because they are easy to maneuver and store better than larger models.  However, smaller wet/dry cleaners are much louder and more prone to tipping.  The smaller tank also fills quickly requiring frequent emptying.
  3. High capacity models are recommended for use in the workshop or garage where large spills occur.  The large capacity tank decreases the need for emptying.

Look for these features when purchasing a wet/dry vacuum.

A pleated cartridge filter is ideal because it is reusable and can be rinsed.  This filter provides better filtration area than a flat filter and it doesn't need to be removed when switching from dry to wet vacuum function.

An automatic shut off device will shut the motor off automatically once the tank has become full of water, preventing the vacuum from overflowing.

A wide set of wheels to help prevent the unit from tipping over.

If you are interested in yard cleanup some large models have the ability to be used as a leaf blower which is great for those that have a lot of trees in the yard.

Some models also have a built in pump attachment.  This allows the water to be pumped through a garden hose that attaches to the vacuum.

A drain valve or spout will make emptying the unit easier.  If the vacuum doesn't have either of these it will be necessary to remove the lid and tip the vacuum over to empty the contents.  This could easily lead to spills.  Smaller units normally don't have a spout or drain option.

Wider hoses and floor nozzles are good to have also.  These will help prevent the vacuum from clogging.

The following attachments may be very useful if they aren't including with the unit at purchase:

  1. Crevice tool - This tool will get into tight corners and around floor edges.
  2. Extension wand - This makes the hose longer for hard to reach areas.
  3. Hose couplings - This joins the extension wand to the hose.
  4. Combination nozzle - This will help alleviate the need of switching nozzles before you switch functions.
  5. Gulper nozzle - This tool works well for the wet vacuum function.
  6. Round brush - This tool works as a scrubbing device.
  7. Cleaning kit - This kit contains all needed to clean delicate upholstery and other areas as well.
